SEO Spam Email: Microfinet Technologies

This is one in a series of posts reviewing and looking at how some of the SEO companies which use bulk emails/spam with ‘we can help your terrible site’ type emails really can (and actually mostly can’t!) help your site.

Read some simple explanations of some of the SEO terms used on this post…

This post is rather different to most of the other SEO spam I’ve posted about, in that Microfinet wanted to simply redesign my site, rather than do SEO for it as such. However, it’s spam, so I’m posting it!

This email came from a Michael Burns using an email. They appear to use the of their domain for spamming purposes, although on their website, which is, they have emails listed – although for the site both the and .com go to the same site… Also interestingly, this spam came into my email account for, although it’s about which is very odd!

Hi Michael,

It sounds like you think you can do a lot for my site. I would be interested to see what your report says!

and Michael replied

Hi James 🙂

How are you?

Thank you for you reply. Yes, I am happy to help you. please share me your requirements.

to which I replied

Hi Michael,

You’re the one who emailed me and said I needed a new site, so please can you tell me why I need a new site…

to which Michael replied

Hello James,

My suggest is that only change the design and layout so the user able to stay on your site more few mins.

The list is below what you need to change.

Header, Banner, Fonts, footer, And Easter Customs and Traditions section design need to change

I am waiting for your reply.

Thank you.

to which I replied

Wow, that sounds like you want to change everything on the site’s design…!  Apart from ‘so the user able to stay on your site more few mins’ are there any technical reasons why you think I need to change things?

to which Michael replied

Yes, if something looks good then why not user not stay more few minutes.

to which I replied

That’s a ‘design’ reason – not a ‘technical’ reason. I asked specifically about any technical reasons…

to which Michael replied

Technically site is okay. I am only asking to change the looks.

to which I replied

OK. Can you confirm that your business’s site is

Also please can you tell me how you know people aren’t spending a good deal of time on the site already?

to which Michael replied

Yes, our business website

No, people are spending time on site, if your site will be such helpful  for people.

and that’s the end of our emails at present!

Their Suggestions

So it seems that Michael really thinks my site doesn’t look very nice. Well, I think it looks great! The site is primarily designed for kids (of all ages) so it’s bright, fun and easy to use.

It seems the reason that Michael wants to re-design the site (apart from making him come money!) is “so the user able to stay on your site more few mins”.

In in last email, Michael actually says people ARE spending time on the site. So he admits that his main reason for re-designing the site is actually worthless!!!

(I’d love to know just how long users are staying on my site. Without having details from my site’s analytics and logs, there is NO WAY that Michael could ever know any of this. So basically his email is using scare tactics – not good…)

This site is about Easter in and in the week of Easter it has about 120,000 visits and 250,000 pageloads, so I’d say it was doing pretty well!!!

Looking at Their Site

With SEO spammers (well this is a design spammer…), I also like to look at their sites, to see if they practice what they preach (I mean would you trust a plumber who had leaking and rusty pipes all over their own house?!); and also to compare their site with a site they say they can help…

Their site is:

Michael said they were only interested in the ‘design’ side of my site and the ‘technical’ things were ok. But how a site works technically is VERY important for SEO and how users will find the site works. So I’ll look at that on their site compared to mine as well…

For HTML Validation, their site has: 49 Errors and 38 Warnings! (My site doesn’t have any…)

On Google Pagespeed their site gets:
Desktop: 56/100
Mobile: 10/100 (This is one of the WORST scores I’ve ever seen on a site – let alone one for a web company…!!!)

My site gets:
Desktop: 100/100
Mobile: 99/100 – so basically perfect on Google’s criteria!

On GTMetrix their site gets:
E (54%) / E (58%)

On GTMetrix my site gets:
A 94% / A (95%) – so my site is better!

Using the ‘WAVE’ Accessibility Testing Tool, my site has a clean bill of health – their site has 100 accessibility errors and 36 alerts – this is also pretty terrible…

Their site doe use SSL/HTTPS, but it’s not configured properly and is still referencing multiple files on the site belonging to the company that made the theme they’re using!

They don’t have a privacy or cookie policy on their site – that’s not good.

They also have three ‘Heading 1’ tags on their home page. Best practise is to only have one.

So it seems that they don’t even know how to set-up their own site properly.

I also find it interesting that they spammed me using the version of their domain but their site is the .com version and they list .com emails on their site… Which should a decent company need to use a different email domain when ‘making initial contact’ if it wasn’t for a spammy reason…?

I have no issues with Indian based web companies; but I do have issues with any company that spams and tries to hide about where and who they are but using fake names and emails.

There are some staff listed on their site, but no ‘Michael Burns’. There appears to be three people in India and one in Spain.

So although they’re spamming me about site design, rather than SEO, they are still a spammer; and yet another one that doesn’t seem to know how to make their own site work correctly.

And I’m glad they said all the technical aspects of my site were good – because they certainly aren’t on their own site! If their design skills are up to their coding skills (and they didn’t even design their own site, it’s an off the shelf theme/template), I really wouldn’t like to think what they’d do to my site!

Also using scare tactics like “so the user able to stay on your site more few mins” (implying that the current site stop this) really isn’t very trustworthy…

So if Microfinet Technologies say your sites needs a redesign, I would think twice (well actually three times and then ignore it!).

But as ever, the choice is yours…
